“I Will Not Call You Papi”

“…I was told to value the curves of my body more than the complexities of my mind,

And to put the books aside because at least it means that I’m wanted.

You only paid attention to my body and the beauty of our imaginary babies,

But you never gave a single thought to the Latin blood, sweat, and tears that made me.

Yo soy latina.

And we are not Latinas only when our hips slope and our breasts poke.

We are not Latinas only when you want us to take home.

Because yo soy latina beyond my flesh and beyond my bones.

I breathe and walk Latin pride, and this body is a piece of home…”

“I identify ‘home’ with the Dominican Republic. It’s about my family. That’s where all those memories were created, and that’s where I feel like they could be recreated. I feel like you always want to go back home.”
