My Hair Is Like the Sun

While I was working on my first book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood (Chronicle Books, 2021), one woman I interviewed told me about a time when her classmates teased her for wearing an afro, calling her “Tree Girl.” Of course, her classmates meant this in a derogatory way. However, this made me think about how our natural hair really does look like nature — and how beautiful that is! My Hair Is Like the Sun (Chronicle Books, 2023) showcases the beauty, diversity, and joy of Black kids’ natural hair by pairing photographs of real kids with colorful illustrations of the sun, the stars, and the clouds, among other elements of nature.
